Draft: under legal review

This is a working draft in plain English. It describes how GradeLamp works today, but a lawyer hasn't reviewed it yet, so the wording may change before it becomes final. Details shown in a dashed box, such as our company name, are placeholders we'll fill in. Questions in the meantime: support@gradelamp.com.

Refunds at a glance

  • 0renewals

    Passes never renew

One payment, a fixed end date, and no charge after it.

  • 14days

    Full refund

Within 14 days of purchase, if you've used 10 or fewer grades.

  • 30days

    Pro-rated refund

For the days you haven't used, within 30 days of purchase.

What you can buy

At launch GradeLamp sells two passes. Both are one-time payments with a fixed end date, so there is no subscription to cancel and nothing is ever charged automatically.

  • 30-Day Pass ($9.99): 30 days (30 × 24 hours) from purchase.
  • Season Pass ($29): At least 120 days, and always through the end of the season you bought it in: 31 January for purchases from August to January, 31 May for purchases from February to May.

Prices are in US dollars, plus tax where applicable.

Paid passes aren't on sale yet. They open once our payment provider approves our account. Until then, nobody can be charged.

The refund rules

These are the same rules as in our Terms of Service:

  1. Passes are one-time payments. They never renew, so there is nothing to cancel and no later charge.
  2. Full refund if you ask within 14 days of purchase and 10 or fewer grades were used on the pass.
  3. Otherwise, a pro-rated refund for the days you haven't used, if you ask within 30 days of purchase.
  4. One refund per student account for each kind of product.
  5. A refund ends the matching access straight away.

“Grades used” counts the essays graded on that pass. Re-opening a result, a cached re-grade of the same draft, and any grade that failed don't count.

How a pro-rated refund is worked out

We refund the share of the price for the days you have left: price × unused days ÷ days in the pass, rounded down to the cent.

For example, a 30-Day Pass ($9.99) refunded on day 20 after 15 grades is past the full-refund limit, so it's pro-rated: 10 unused days out of 30 gives a refund of $3.33.

How to ask for a refund

  1. Signed in: go to Account, then Billing, and choose “Request a refund” next to your pass. The form shows whether you're eligible for a full or pro-rated refund before you send it.
  2. A parent or guardian who paid: email us from the address you paid with. You don't need the student's account.
  3. Or email us at support@gradelamp.com from the email on the purchase, with the order number from your receipt if you have it. No reason needed.

We process refunds within 2 business days. The money goes back to the card or account you paid with, through Dodo Payments; your bank may take a few more days to show it. You'll get an email when it's done.

A refund ends the pass straight away. Your saved essays stay in your history until they expire, 30 days after each grade.

Receipts and your card statement

Your receipt comes from Dodo Payments, our payment provider. Your card statement shows [Card statement descriptor].

Dodo Payments is our merchant of record: it runs checkout, sends receipts and handles sales tax, VAT and GST. Refunds are our decision, so please ask us first. If something looks wrong on your statement, email us before disputing the charge with your bank, and we'll sort it out quickly.

Duplicate or mistaken charges

A student can have only one live pass at a time. If a payment still goes through twice (for example, a student and a parent pay at the same moment), we refund the later payment automatically and email both of you. If we ever charge you by mistake, we refund it in full.

Subscriptions

GradeLamp doesn't sell subscriptions yet. Plans that renew are planned from 22 January 2027. Before any plan renews, we'll add its refund rules here and in the Terms, with at least 30 days' notice.

Your legal rights

This policy adds to your rights under the consumer laws where you live; it never takes them away. If the law gives you a better deal, you get it.
